Early Garden Updates from Feral Flavors
Share
Things have been warming up and projects and planting are afoot at the Feral Flavors Urban Homestead. Let's go over some of the things I've done that you can get started on too!
🌿 Garden Clean-Up & Soil Prep
The first order of business was clearing out last season’s debris and cleaning up all the raised beds. With everything neat and tidy, I added:
-
Fresh mulch and straw
-
A layer of compost
-
Worm castings for a nutrient boost
I’ve also started watering infrequently to help things along.
🌱 Seeds in the Ground
Even though it’s still early, cold-hardy crops are safe to sow now. Here’s what I’ve planted so far:
-
Radish
-
Parsnip
-
Turnip
-
Green onions & onion sets
-
Garlic
-
Cold weather loving Lettuces
-
Spinach
-
Swiss chard
-
Carrots
-
Cold-hardy herbs like Cilantro
-
Peas & Sweet Peas
-
And a sprinkle of cosmos and poppies for color 🌸
-
🍃 Perennial Progress

My rhubarb is being forced and is already over a foot tall! It’ll stay covered for at least two more weeks. For tips and tricks on how to force your rhubarb check out my article - "Rhubarb Forcing and Early Season Harvest"

Nectarine and peach trees are budding and will bloom any day now.
-

- Onions and Garlic are up and getting taller.
- Perennial Flowers are up all over including iris, daylily, lily, clematis, bleeding heart, tulips, daffodil, hollyhock, peony, and roses are budding.

🌑 New Garden Space: Shade Bed
On the shady side of the house, I’ve started cardboard mulching a new garden bed. This space will be dedicated to shade-loving plants, and I’m looking forward to experimenting with what thrives there.
🌸 Welcome, Lilac
I also hardened off and planted a new lilac bush that I’m especially excited about. It’s in the ground and settling in well.
That’s the garden so far! Things are just getting started, and I’ll be sharing more updates as the season unfolds. If you're gardening in a similar zone, now’s a great time to prep and plant your cool-weather favorites.
What are you growing right now?
